Hungary will continue to offer automatic asylum to Ukrainian men of military age, aged between 25 and 60 years, even against the decision made by the European Union in July. The Hungarian prime minister, Péter Magyar, announced this decision in Budapest, in statements to journalists.
Magyar justified his government's position with the existence of ethnic Hungarians fleeing from the Transcarpathia region of Ukraine to Hungary. This region of Ukraine has a significant population of Hungarian ethnicity.
The EU member states had decided in July to take measures regarding Ukraine's "defensive needs," which led to the decision to suspend the automatic reception of Ukrainian men of military age. Hungary chose not to follow this common line of the European Union.
