A brain implant in Korea was controlled from a distance of over 10,000 kilometers, demonstrating the possibility of remote manipulation of brain stimulation devices. The signal traveled through the Internet to a computer located in a South Korean laboratory, which retransmitted the command to the implant through a wireless connection. The system responded, on average, in about 109 milliseconds.
The system, called RAPIDO, combines two distinct functions for brain modulation: drug administration through a microfluidic system and luminous stimulation through a micro-LED. These functions can be controlled independently and programmed in advance, offering flexibility in how the treatment is applied.
One of the characteristics of RAPIDO is its rechargeable and replaceable drug cartridge, which allows repeating dose administration without needing to replace the entire implant. This functionality represents a significant advantage in terms of maintenance and duration of use of the device.
