Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez reiterated that Ceuta is Spanish territory and argued that there is no evidence implicating Morocco in the migration crisis in the autonomous city. Sánchez stated that the government has nothing to hide and will reveal all documents related to the incident.
The leaders of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, and the Vox party, Santiago Abascal, strongly criticized the Spanish government's position. Both held Morocco responsible for what happened and demanded Sánchez's resignation, arguing that the prime minister failed in his response to the crisis.
Diplomatic tension between Spain and Morocco intensified after thousands of migrants attempted to enter Ceuta in May 2021, at a time of tension between the two countries. Rabat withdrew its ambassador from Madrid in protest, while the Spanish executive found itself forced to manage both an internal and external political crisis simultaneously.
