Maduro invokes head of state immunity and asks US courts to drop drug trafficking charges against him

Maduro, imprisoned for eight months in New York, asked American courts on Thursday to reject the drug trafficking charges against him, claiming he is entitled to immunity as head of state of a sovereign nation. The document was submitted by his lawyer Barry Pollack to the court handling the case.

Maduro's lawyer argues that American courts "lack jurisdiction" to try him, as well as his wife, Cilia Flores, who is also imprisoned in the United States. The government in Washington, however, has not recognized Maduro as head of state since 2019.

Maduro, 63 years old, is charged with four crimes, including "narco-terrorism". If his attempt to dismiss the case fails, he will have to appear in court for his trial scheduled for October 1st.
