President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated on Thursday (the 3rd) that the Proposed Constitutional Amendment (PEC) to end the 6x1 schedule did not advance in Congress this week due to the action of allies of Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), his main opponent in the presidential race.
The PEC was approved in the Senate's Committee on Constitution and Justice (CCJ) the day before, but was not taken to the floor. It is up to the Senate president, Davi Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP), to schedule the proposal. Last week, Alcolumbre had lunch with Lula and the speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), to discuss the voting agenda.
After the meeting, the Senate president said the PEC would be sent to the CCJ, but dodged questions about a floor vote. Despite this, Lula's inner circle said they believed it was possible the issue would be voted on.
The Presidential Palace wanted to approve the PEC given the assessment that it is a matter of broad popular support with potential to be exploited as a political showcase.
