Taxation on Transmontana dams is a matter of justice, municipalities say

SAPO Notícias3 September 2026 at 13:39

The 10 municipalities in the Trás-os-Montes region covered by the sale of the six dams welcomed the decision by the tax authorities to collect the taxes owed. The sale was carried out by EDP to Engie.

The municipalities consider that the collection of taxes represents a matter of fiscal and territorial justice, arguing that the funds should be applied in the region that hosts the infrastructure.

The sale operation of the Trás-os-Montes dams involved the transfer of six hydroelectric power plants from the Portuguese company EDP to the French company Engie, a deal that attracted great media and political attention in Portugal.

The affected municipalities have been defending that the taxation of profits generated by the exploitation of these dams should benefit local communities, given the environmental and territorial impact that these infrastructures represent for the Trás-os-Montes region.
