Montenegro will maintain political dialogue with all parties, including Chega

Jornal Económico3 September 2026 at 13:54

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro stated on Thursday that, despite the motion of no confidence presented by Chega, the Government will continue to politically dialogue with all parties in Parliament. Montenegro said that the executive's strategic line involves "counting on institutional cooperation with the Assembly of the Republic and, within Parliament, with all parties," considering that this represents "the collective interest, the national interest."

The Prime Minister rejected that the PSD/CDS Government positions itself at equal distance between Chega and PS, the two largest opposition forces. According to Montenegro, "it is not a question of equal distance, but of proximity," explaining that the executive is "close to the people" and also "close to the sovereign bodies, in particular the Assembly of the Republic."

Montenegro announced that the Government will initiate contacts with all opposition parties to prepare the State Budget for 2027, noting that this dialogue has already been taking place "in legislative processes that are fundamental." The Prime Minister also highlighted that dialogue does not mean that the opposition fully adheres "in fullness" to the Government's proposals, nor that the Government does not respect disagreement.

The head of the executive stated that he has "a very deep-rooted democratic respect and principle of democratic coexistence," adding that "all parties will say what they want for the country." Montenegro made these statements before attending the inauguration of the re-elected President of São Tomé and Príncipe, Carlos Vila Nova.

The Palácio do Planalto announced that it considers the INSS benefits queue cleared, after the number of requests under analysis (1.252 million) fell below the new requests registered in August (about 1.3 million). However, about 224 thousand requests still await a response for more than 45 days, the deadline previously used as reference. The government highlights that requests over 45 days fell from 1.8 million (peak in February) to just over 200 thousand. The average processing time is 34 days. To reduce the backlog, the government cites hiring of servers, remote service, documentary expertise, bonuses and blitz events.
