Operation Marquês: Court rejects Sócrates' precautionary measure regarding the appointment of an ex officio lawyer

The Lisbon Court rejected a precautionary measure presented by José Sócrates regarding the appointment of an ex officio lawyer by the Bar Association. The court considered that there was no legal basis for the measure sought by the former prime minister.

The Bar Association guaranteed that it had acted exclusively based on public interest when proceeding with the appointment of the ex officio lawyer to represent Sócrates in the Operation Marquês case. The institution emphasized that its action followed the applicable regulatory procedures.

Operation Marquês is a large-scale judicial case involving suspicions of corruption, tax fraud, and money laundering. José Sócrates was prime minister of Portugal between 2005 and 2011.

The case continues to spark debate about defendants' rights and the competencies of the Bar Association in the designation of ex officio lawyers in criminal proceedings.
