The Coimbra Municipal Council intends to implement an automatic access control system for streets in the city's Baixa. The objective is to restrict vehicle traffic in certain areas of the historic centre, allowing only the passage of authorized vehicles.
Initially, access to the new streets will be controlled by security forces. This temporary measure will be in place until the necessary equipment to perform automatic access control is installed.
The municipality justifies this initiative with the need to reduce traffic in the historic centre, contributing to the safety and quality of life in Coimbra's old town. The progressive installation of the automatic system will allow for more efficient and permanent management of access restrictions.
