The ADN, through Eduardo Quintal, proposes that the Regional Government of the Azores, the Republic's Government, and producer organizations promote with the European Commission the specific monitoring of banana and evaluate its inclusion in the annex of sensitive products. The party considers that measures should not be taken only after the damages resulting from the EU-Mercosur agreement are demonstrated, defending a preventive approach.
According to the party, Regulation (EU) 2026/687, applicable to the agricultural safeguards of the EU-Mercosur agreement, includes banana among the products covered. The ADN's proposal aims to ensure that the banana sector in the region has adequate protection before any potential damages materialize.
Eduardo Quintal highlights the importance of acting proactively in defense of regional producers, considering that specific monitoring would allow for the early identification of potential negative impacts of the trade agreement on banana production in the Azores.
