Pedro Sánchez announced this Thursday in Congress that King Felipe VI will visit Ceuta and Melilla "in the coming weeks", a visit with which the head of State will convey Spain's "absolute commitment" to both cities.
The prime minister argued that, after two decades without a visit from the head of State (following the only visit by Juan Carlos I, in 2007), it is necessary for the Monarch to personally travel to the two autonomous cities and hold meetings with their authorities, businesspeople, and citizens.
This visit comes in the wake of the social, political, and economic crisis caused by the entry of 80,000 migrants on July 30 and 31, which deeply affected both Spanish cities in North Africa.
