Areeira Beach, in Nazaré, was the setting for a cleanup action organized by the civic movement One Piece After Another, created in 2019 by Ricardo Machado. The activity took place on a Saturday and counted with the participation of 34 volunteers, including pathfinders and scout leaders from various regions of the country, under the "24 às Cegas" initiative, promoted by ObsIV, the Scouts of the Leiria-Fátiva region.
For about three hours, the volunteers collected 415 kilos of waste from the sand. Among the material removed were ropes, clay pots, styrofoam, nets, plastic packaging, glass, cotton buds, bottle caps, toothbrushes, light bulbs, and various other objects.
One Piece After Another was born with the objective of mobilizing volunteers for the cleanup of beaches, forests, lagoons, and riverbanks. The movement grew over the years, developing actions between Pedrógão and Nazaré and in other locations of the Leiria district, also committing to environmental awareness outreach with schools, associations, and other organized groups.
By 2025, the movement counted thousands of volunteers involved and dozens of tons of garbage collected since its creation. In addition to removing waste from the sand, the objective is to draw attention to the amount of garbage that continues to reach the beaches and the sea, as well as the need to reduce waste and improve consumption and disposal habits.
