Norwegian authorities seized a Russian expedition cruise ship in Svalbard, an Arctic territory under Norwegian jurisdiction. The seizure was carried out at the request of Ukrainian state oil company Naftogaz.
The objective of the seizure was to guarantee compensation related to the illegal annexation of Crimea by Russia. The Ukrainian claim involves an amount of 4.2 billion euros associated with assets lost in Crimea.
The case arises in the context of the dispute between Ukraine and Russia regarding the annexation of Crimea in 2014, which resulted in the loss of Ukrainian assets and investments on the peninsula. Naftogaz has been seeking to recover these funds through various international jurisdictions.
