Historical El Niño generates simultaneous passage of hurricanes and tropical storm in the Pacific: 'Something rare to observe'

oglobo3 September 2026 at 05:03

Two hurricanes and a tropical storm were simultaneously crossing the Pacific Ocean on Wednesday, in an event considered rare by meteorologists. The phenomenon is attributed to the warming of the Pacific waters, caused by the historical intensity of the El Niño climate phenomenon.

Hurricane Lowell reached category 5, the highest on the hurricane scale, while heading west. Hurricane Karina, category 4, was also moving through the Pacific right behind Lowell. Both were being monitored by the National Hurricane Center of the United States, which reported that the two systems should pass far from the Hawaiian coast.

According to the NHC, the waves caused by Lowell propagate northward and should affect some parts of Hawaii in the coming days, possibly causing dangerous conditions near the Hawaiian coast.

Tropical Storm Marie was following behind the two hurricanes, located hundreds of kilometers from the Mexican coast. According to the National Hurricane Center, Marie was expected to become a hurricane later that Wednesday, further expanding the intense activity over the Pacific Ocean.
