Temperatures are set to rise significantly in mainland Portugal from this Thursday onwards, with thermometers exceeding 40 degrees in several regions of the country. The intense heat is the result of a mass of hot air coming from northern Africa, which will especially affect the inland and southern regions of Portuguese territory.
Fourteen mainland districts are under yellow warning due to extreme heat, both on Thursday and Friday. This warning, issued by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), indicates a risk situation for vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, children, and people with chronic diseases.
Health authorities recommend that the population avoid sun exposure during the hottest hours, between 11:00 and 17:00, stay hydrated, and check on more vulnerable neighbors and family members. The use of sunscreen, light clothing, and hats is also advised.
Temperatures are expected to start dropping gradually from Saturday onwards, although the heat will remain above normal values for this time of year.
