Águas do Rio is carrying out on Wednesday (2) the replacement of a section of the water main that burst in the early hours of Tuesday (1), on Avenida Rei Pelé, at Maracanã, in the North Zone of Rio. The service is expected to be completed tonight, but the intervention is considered complex. The new pipe, with a 1.5-meter diameter, arrived in the morning and an excavator is working to open the space for installation.
Águas do Rio was only able to begin work on the water main in the early hours of Wednesday. Throughout Tuesday, Naturgy, the gas company, carried out the removal of its pipelines that were near the leak site. Naturgy reported that it finished the intervention at 11pm, without interruption to gas supply.
The water leak, which occurred in the early hours of Monday to Tuesday, flooded Avenida Rei Pelé and was sufficient to open a crater near gate 2 of the Maracanã Stadium. With the water main out of service, residents in the area may face water supply interruptions.
