Fishing of bivalves prohibited in the international section of the Minho

Observador2 September 2026 at 12:05

The fishing of bivalves was prohibited in the international section of the Minho river, which forms the border between Portugal and Spain. The measure comes in a context of sanitary alert related to the contamination of mollusks.

The police clarified that the international section of the Minho river is not considered a bivalve production zone, so it was not monitored by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA). This absence of regular monitoring contributed to the current situation.

The Management Commission of the Minho river is developing efforts to monitor the state of mollusks in the region. The objective is to assess the extent of the contamination and determine when it will be safe to resume fishing activity in the affected area.
