The Paço dos Duques de Bragança, in Guimarães, will host in 2027 an international congress dedicated to the manor house. The meeting will gather for six days researchers, specialists, and professionals from different fields, national and international, to reflect on the manor house as a space of representation, living, memory, transformation, and heritage valorization.
The initiative is promoted by the Paço dos Duques de Bragança, Guimarães Castle, and Church of São Miguel do Castelo, integrated into the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage / Museums and Monuments of Portugal. It also counts on the partnership of the Art History Institute of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at NOVA University of Lisbon and the Casa de Rui Barbosa Foundation, of the Ministry of Culture of Brazil.
The scientific program will be structured around four major thematic lines: patrons, artists, experiences, and rituals; structures, distributive programs, and functional and symbolic nomenclatures; fixed ornamentation; and movable equipment and their specific functions.
Throughout the congress, the aim is to promote an analysis of the continuities, transformations, appropriations, and reconfigurations that have marked these residential spaces over time, crossing different historical, artistic, architectural, social, and heritage perspectives.
