Real Madrid published a message on social media about the floods that affected Nepal and Tibet, which generated strong controversy in China. The Spanish football club's post made a joint reference to the two territories.
The Chinese press considered the reference as "incorrect." China considers Tibet as an autonomous region under its jurisdiction and does not recognize its separate sovereignty.
Real Madrid's publication was interpreted as an implicit recognition of Tibet as a separate entity from Chinese territory, which provoked negative reactions in China.
This is not the first time that international companies have faced controversies in China over issues related to Tibet, a territory that Beijing considers an integral part of the People's Republic of China.
