Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territories, argues that Portugal must interpret its obligations regarding Palestine through the lens of its own Constitution, attributing specific meaning to these constitutional obligations.
The rapporteur rejects that the Peace Committee proposed by Donald Trump can replace the role of the United Nations in the Palestinian question, rejecting any attempt to marginalize the international organization in this process.
Albanese calls on Portugal and other UN member states to honor their constitutional and legal obligations regarding the recognition and support of the State of Palestine. The rapporteur's position comes at a time when the future of the peace process in the Middle East and the role of different international bodies in resolving the conflict are being discussed.
