Portugal spent more than 10% of public expenditure on education in 2024, placing it above the European Union average for this indicator. This data reflects the importance the country assigns to the education sector in the European context.

Regarding the weight on Gross Domestic Product, investment in education in Portugal initially followed a trajectory of growth and then contraction. It went from 4.5% in 2019 to 4.7% in 2020, remaining at this value in 2021, before declining to 4.4% in 2022.

In 2023 and 2024, the percentage of GDP dedicated to education settled at 4.3%, representing a decrease compared to the peak of 4.7% reached during the pandemic. This reduction contrasts with the increase in percentage public expenditure on education observed in the last year.
