More screen time may have an unexpected effect on children, study reveals

RFM1 September 2026 at 15:40

More screen time may have an unexpected effect on children, according to a recent study. The title and abstract of the article suggest that the relationship between screen time and children's cognitive performance may be more complex than previously thought.

A longitudinal study followed children for eight years, allowing researchers to observe development patterns over time. The results found by researchers were considered surprising, contradicting some initial expectations about the negative effects of screen time.

The research suggests that spending more time in front of screens is not always associated with worse cognitive performance in the children studied. However, the article indicates that there is an important detail to consider in these conclusions, although this nuance is not specified in the provided text.

What species is this: coot

A reader photographed a coot at Lagoa do Lugar de Baixo, in Madeira, and asked for help identifying a bird with a yellowish upper part of the beak, suspecting it might be a white-winged coot (Fulica leucoptera). Ornithologist Gonçalo Elias identified the bird as a common coot (Fulica atra), explaining that the yellowish patch on the frontal shield is probably due to dirt accumulated in the lagoon waters, not the other species. The specialist described the coot as a bird the size of a small duck, with black plumage and white beak and frontal shield, common in wetland areas such as lagoons, marshes and reservoirs.
