Medications for diabetes and obesity, known as weight loss pens, are not associated with an increase in suicidal thoughts, depression, or other serious psychiatric harm. This is the conclusion of a study published in the scientific journal Diabetology, conducted by researchers from New Mexico State University (NMSU) and the University of Nevada in Las Vegas, both in the United States.
Reports that GLP-1 class medications such as Mounjaro, Ozempic, and Wegovy could trigger suicidal ideation, depression, or anxiety emerged after these drugs gained widespread popularity. Such reports led to formal safety reviews by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the regulatory agency in the United States, and the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
