A bombing ordered by the government of President Abelardo de la Espriella killed 20 guerrillas from a dissident faction of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in the country's Amazon region. The military operation was carried out against members of the Central Staff (EMC), a group formed by dissidents who rejected the peace agreement signed between the guerrilla group and the government in 2016.
The attack is considered the deadliest of its kind in years, according to information released by Bogotá. The operation targeted the group commanded by Iván Mordisco, a rebel considered the most wanted in the country. A military source quoted by Colombian press stated this was the new government's third bombing against guerrillas and the largest since the government of Juan Manuel Santos, which lasted from 2010 to 2018.
The action is part of the hard-line policy against criminal groups promoted by the Espriella government. Colombian authorities have not yet released further details about the operation nor indicated whether there were civilian or military casualties in the attack.
