Crown Prince Haakon VIII is Norway's new king. He ascended to the throne immediately following the death of his father, Harald V, who had ruled the country for more than three decades.
The new sovereign took an oath to the Norwegian Constitution this Tuesday in a special session of Parliament, the Storting. During the ceremony, Haakon VIII promised to dedicate himself entirely to the country.
Haakon VIII had already been serving as regent since 2023, when Harald V faced health issues. With this prior experience, he was prepared to assume the throne definitively.
The transition marks the end of Harald V's long reign, who died at age 87. With the coronation of Haakon VIII, Norway continues its constitutional monarchy.
