The Instituto Português de Oncologia (IPO) in Coimbra received the Gold-level certification as a Center of Excellence in Cardio-Oncology, the highest distinction awarded by the International Cardio-Oncology Society (IC-OS). This certification recognizes the activity developed in the cardiovascular monitoring of cancer patients and the existence of an integrated and multidisciplinary approach in this area.
Cardio-Oncology seeks to reconcile the effectiveness of oncological treatments with cardiovascular safety, through the prevention, risk assessment, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of any complications associated with the disease or the therapies used. The Cardiology Department at IPO Coimbra has a dedicated team composed of three cardiologists and five cardiopneumology technicians.
The activity is developed in coordination with other departments of the institute, local health units of the National Health Service, and other Portuguese oncology institutes. The certification recognizes the existence of a differentiated care structure, oriented toward the prevention, risk stratification, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of cardiovascular complications associated with oncological disease and its treatments.
In 2025, cardiologist Catarina Neves also obtained certification in Cardio-Oncology, awarded by the IC-OS and the European Society of Cardiology. IPO Coimbra considers that the certification represents recognition of the work developed by the multidisciplinary team and a reinforcement of the differentiation of care provided in this area.
