The Spanish prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, criticized King Felipe VI during an interview, questioning how many times the monarch visited Ceuta during his reign. The criticism arose at a time when Sánchez is under pressure from Spanish public opinion.

Sánchez stated that "the king has been reigning for over 20 years," a declaration that contains a factual error, since Felipe VI ascended to the throne in 2014, making it approximately a decade of reign.

During the same interview, Sánchez took the opportunity to defend his own record of visits to Ceuta and other towns, contrasting his stance with that of the king. This is not the first time the Spanish prime minister has expressed indirect criticism of the monarchy, in a context of growing debate over the role of national symbols.
