Leila Abolhasani, a 43-year-old woman, is set to be executed by hanging in Iran after being convicted on charges of "Moharebeh" (enmity against God), related to the January anti-government protests. The case has generated widespread discussion on social media about the reasons cited by the Iranian judiciary and the wave of executions that followed the demonstrations in the Islamic Republic.
According to Iran Human Rights (IHR) and UN reports, Iran has executed at least 27 people in direct connection with the protests. Leila's family states that her only crime was filming and photographing a store that had been set on fire during the protests, the Ofogh Koorosh store.
The Iranian judiciary, however, alleges that Leila herself set the store on fire, which led to her death sentence. The family denies the accusations and no details about any evidence against her have been made public. Leila was arrested while merely documenting the fire, according to her relatives.
