The German government formally accused Russia for the attack with at least one bomb drone against Leipzig airport in August, according to coinciding information from Der Spiegel magazine and Bild newspaper. It is the first time that Germany directly attributes responsibility to Russia for this incident.
The artifact did not explode because it was fortuitously neutralized by an airport worker while operating next to several military supply aircraft destined for Ukraine. The worker's intervention prevented the drone from detonating near the aircraft.
The incident immediately activated alarms among German security forces, which classified the attack as a "hybrid action" perpetrated by "foreign agents" against critical infrastructure of Germany. The case raises concerns about the vulnerability of European strategic facilities to external threats.
