The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) issued a yellow hot weather warning for 11 districts in mainland Portugal, due to a sharp rise in temperatures forecast for Thursday, September 3rd. The warning comes into effect at 09:00 on Thursday and is expected to remain in place until 06:00 on Friday, September 4th.
This warning is being issued on the day climatological autumn begins, although the high temperatures indicate that summer has not yet completely departed. Both a quite hot day and night are expected during the warning period.
According to the latest IPMA update, the 11 districts covered by the yellow hot weather warning do not include the North and Centre coastal districts, which were excluded from this list. This uneven distribution of high temperatures is common in this type of meteorological phenomenon in mainland Portugal.
