The Iranian President, Massoud Pezeshkian, declared that Iran will immediately return to its commitments if the United States returns to the memorandum of understanding signed in June to end the war in the Middle East. This declaration was made at a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Kyrgyzstan.
The memorandum of understanding aimed to bring a definitive end to the war between Tehran and Washington, which began in late February with airstrikes by the US and Israel against the Islamic Republic. The agreement collapsed in July, with both sides accusing each other of violating its terms.
Pezeshkian's statements come at a time when the Strait of Hormuz continues to be an important point of discord between Iran and the United States. The two sides resumed the exchange of fire on Monday, after a month of relative calm.
Tehran maintains the closure of this strategic waterway, while stating that it will return to its commitments under the agreement, mainly reopening Hormuz, if the United States does the same. On Monday, the Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, had already stated that "the United States must return to its commitments" and that "in that case, everything can return to normal."
