The month of August ends with a change in the weather in Portugal. After several days marked by higher humidity, cloudiness and periods of rain, the anticyclone should gain strength from Monday, 31 August. The weekend was still marked by a more Atlantic pattern, with high humidity and possibility of light rain or drizzle on the North and Centre coast, especially during Sunday.
For Monday, the Luso Meteo forecast points to partly cloudy or clear skies across the mainland, although the coast of the North and Centre regions may start the day with periods of greater cloudiness. There is still a possibility of some drizzle during the morning in these areas, but precipitation is considered unlikely and, if it occurs, should be light. Wind should blow light to moderate from the northwest, between 10 and 20 km/h, possibly becoming temporarily more intense on the coast and in the highlands during the afternoon.
Behind this improvement is the strengthening of the anticyclone, which is beginning to approach and exert greater influence over the Iberian Peninsula. This area of high pressure should favour a more stable atmospheric circulation during the first days of September. Minimum temperatures should drop slightly, especially inland, while maximum temperatures may register a small rise during Monday.
The strengthening of the anticyclone opens the way for a more significant rise in temperatures in the following days. Luso Meteo forecasts that an extensive zone of subtropical high pressure will extend between the Azores and Central Europe, allowing a very warm air mass to settle over mainland Portugal. Between Wednesday and Thursday, temperatures could exceed 40°C again in some inland areas. In the Azores, the scenario will be different, with periods of very cloudy skies, sunny intervals and possibility of scattered showers. In Madeira, the anticyclone will continue to favour more stable conditions, with temperatures between 27 and 30°C.
