Balasar inaugurates new Eucharistic Shrine in October

Jornal 36030 August 2026 at 14:33

The Eucharistic Shrine of Balasar, dedicated to the spirituality of Blessed Alexandrina Maria da Costa, will be solemnly inaugurated on October 10 and 11, an initiative promoted by the Archbishopric of Braga and the Alexandrina Foundation of Balasar. The new temple is born as a space for pilgrimage, prayer and eucharistic adoration, seeking to perpetuate one of the fundamental dimensions of Alexandrina's life and spiritual message.

The celebrations begin on Saturday, October 10, at 10:00, with the translation of the mortal remains of Blessed Alexandrina from the parish church of Balasar to the new Shrine, a ceremony presided by D. José Cordeiro, Metropolitan Archbishop of Braga. On Sunday, October 11, at 16:00, the Dedication of the Church and Altar takes place, with the presence of D. Andrés Carrascosa Coso, Apostolic Nuncio in Portugal.

Alexandrina Maria da Costa was born in 1904 in Balasar, in the municipality of Póvoa de Varzim, and died in 1955. She was a Salesian Cooperatrix, known for her intense mystical life, devotion to the Eucharist and offering of her suffering. She was beatified by St. John Paul II on April 25, 2004, in Rome. The translation of her mortal remains constitutes one of the historic moments of the celebrations, establishing a new connection between the Blessed and the Shrine.

The inauguration takes place near the liturgical memory of Blessed Alexandrina, celebrated on October 13, and should bring pilgrims from different parts of the country and abroad to Balasar.
