The Traditional Fair of Portela de Alvite is a celebration of the identity of the rural world that takes place in this region of Alto Minho. The event unites the parishes of Merufe, in the municipality of Monção, and Sistelo, in the municipality of Arcos de Valdevez.
The event features various activities linked to rural traditions, including a fair of the garrano and cachena, which are equine and bovine breeds characteristic of the region. The program also includes an agricultural contest and a gathering of oxen.
Among the entertainment activities, the fair features horse races, folklore performances, challenge songs, traditional processions and drumming groups, thus promoting the preservation and enhancement of local traditions and rural world culture.
