European Union says it respects Iceland's "no" and points to the country as a "close partner"

Diário de Viseu30 August 2026 at 17:30

The European Union stated today that it respects Iceland's decision to reject the resumption of accession negotiations with the community bloc. The position was expressed after the Icelandic people officially refused to resume the European integration process.

The European executive highlighted that Iceland continues to be considered "one of the closest and most trusted partners" among the 27 EU Member States, regardless of the decision on accession.

The EU note indicates that the outcome of the Icelandic referendum does not compromise the existing bilateral relations between the Nordic country and the European community. The bloc maintains its openness to cooperate with Iceland in various areas of common interest.
