Nepal: Pope asks for solidarity with flood victims

Pope Leo XIV called for solidarity with the victims of the flood that affected Tibet and Nepal last Wednesday. The appeal was made after the recitation of the Angelus, from Liberty Square, in Castel Gandolfo, in Italy, before pilgrims from various parts of the world.
Leo XIV asked that prayers be offered for those who lost their lives, for the wounded and missing, for the families and rescue workers. The Pope also asked that everyone's concern contribute to alleviating suffering and getting the necessary assistance to the affected population.
According to a new Nepali toll, at least 750 people died and more than 3,000 remain missing. On the Tibet side, China's state broadcaster reported that at least 16 people died and 546 are missing, including 261 foreigners.
In the same speech, the Pope also invited prayer for peace and justice, citing Saint Augustine and asking that those who, with courage, break and distribute the bread of peace, overcoming divisions, promoting justice and practicing forgiveness for the good of all, increase in the world.

Castel Gandolfo, Itália, 30 ago 2026 (Ecclesia) – O Papa apelou hoje à solidariedade com as vítimas da enxurrada da última quarta-feira que afetou o Tibete e o Nepal.
“Rezemos por quem perdeu a vida, pelos feridos e desaparecidos, pelas famílias, pelos socorristas. Que a solicitude de todos contribua para aliviar os sofrimentos e para fazer chegar os apoios necessários à população”, pediu Leão XIV, após a recitação do ângelus, desde a Praça da Liberdade, em Castel Gandolfo.
A intervenção começou com uma oração por todas as pessoas afetadas pela “terrível inundação que se verificou no Nepal e no Tibete”.
Pelo menos 750 pessoas morreram e mais de 3 mil continuam desaparecidas dos dois lados da fronteira que separa o Tibete do Nepal, segundo um novo balanço nepalês divulgado hoje.
A emissora estatal da China informou, por sua vez, que pelo menos 16 pessoas morreram na região do Tibete, onde 546 estão ainda desaparecidas, incluindo 261 estrangeiros.
Perante peregrinos de várias partes do mundo, o Papa convidou a rezar pela paz.
“Santo Agostinho, cuja memória celebrámos nestes dias, dizia que a paz é semelhante ao pão do milagre que crescia nas mãos dos discípulos enquanto o partiam e o distribuíam”, referiu.
Leão XIV pediu que “aumentem no mundo aqueles que, com coragem, partem e distribuem o pão da paz, superando as divisões, promovendo a justiça, praticando o perdão para o bem de todos”.
