Minister Gilmar Mendes of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) stated during a trial that the Court should stay "out of elections" and asked that the tribunal not be involved in electoral political disputes. The statement occurred amid a session about a possible investigation against Minister Alexandre de Moraes.
During the session, Gilmar Mendes accused colleague André Mendonça of having conducted the order for investigations against Moraes with "evident political-electoral direction," suggesting the initiative attempted to associate itself with the Independence Day holiday on September 7. Mendonça rebutted the criticism, asking that Gilmar not point fingers at him and stating that "I'm not just anyone," demanding respect for the tribunal and accusing the senior minister of being "careless."
Minister Edson Fachin also entered the debate when commenting on leaks, questioning: "Who is the general leaker of the Republic? Is it the Federal Police? It's interesting that in our offices, Minister Fux, nothing is leaked." Fachin clarified that all potential leaks are being investigated by the Court.
Gilmar Mendes added that the situation "looks like the purpose is to play with chaos," reinforcing his position that the STF should be separate from electoral disputes. The trial involves the discussion about an investigation against Moraes, at a moment of tension among the Court's ministers.
