Rua da Quitanda in downtown Rio de Janeiro will host on September 19th the 5th edition of the Rio de Janeiro Trans & Travesti March. The event will gather at 1 PM in front of Queerioca, an LGBTI+ culture and resistance space located at 81 Rua da Quitanda. The program combines political act, social actions, activism, and artistic demonstrations that will extend into the early morning hours.
With the theme "On the streets, for the defense of democracy," this year's march takes on a political mobilization character in the final stretch leading to the first round of elections. The event brings together demands for rights of the trans and travesti community, offers of public services, and cultural presentations.
Gab Van, founder of the March and executive director of the Transmasculine League, stated that the 5th edition is a political affirmation of the community's existence, mobilizing knowledge born from within the community itself to tell the State and society that they will not accept a democracy that excludes them.
