Jornal de Negócios15 September 2026 at 15:58

The Portuguese fintech Eupago, which also owns Pagaqui, announced the launch of Bizum in Portugal, allowing national commerce to start accepting this payment method that is a reference in Spain. This integration allows the connection between the two Iberian countries through an instant payments system.

Bizum is a mobile payments system that allows instant transfers between individuals and also payments to merchants. With this novelty, Portuguese merchants can now receive payments from Spanish consumers quickly and simply.

The company anticipates that within a three-year horizon, five thousand active merchants in Portugal will be reached through this solution. The goal also includes the completion of three million transactions and an annual processed volume of 180 million euros.

With this initiative, Eupago hopes to facilitate cross-border transactions between Portugal and Spain, taking advantage of the fact that Bizum has a base of 30 million users in Spain.

Why this matters

Portuguese consumers and merchants can now carry out transactions with the vast base of Spanish Bizum users, which can boost cross-border trade. Eupago projects significant growth in transaction volume and active merchants, signaling a bet on the Iberian digital payments market.
