EU support for fruit and vegetable producer associations is effective but lacks attractiveness

RTP Notícias15 September 2026 at 17:30

European Union funding for fruit and vegetable producer organizations is effective in supporting sales operations, but does not help make them more attractive to consumers. This is the main conclusion of an audit conducted by the European Court of Auditors.

The ECA report evaluated the operational programs funded by the Common Agricultural Policy that support these producer organizations. The audit examined whether European money was being well used for the intended purposes.

According to the auditors, although funding has proven effective in boosting fruit and vegetable producers' sales, the same was not true regarding the ability to make products more appealing to consumers. This gap may limit the positive impact these programs could have on the sector.

Why this matters

Fruit and vegetable producers in Portugal, as members of producer organizations supported by European funds, may not be fully benefiting from the available funding to grow and attract new members. The audit indicates that, although operational support works, improvements are needed in how these funds are used to strengthen the attractiveness and competitiveness of these organizations in the agricultural sector.

Finance Leaders Combine Technique and Behavior

The recruiters Felipe Brunieri and Guilherme Malfi, from Assetz Expert Recruitment, challenge the simplified idea that Finance professionals are hired for technical ability and fired only for behavioral issues. According to them, technical and behavioral competencies are evaluated at different moments in the career, including hiring, promotion, development, and termination. The nature of the financial area requires that technical knowledge remains relevant even in leadership positions, covering legislation, accounting standards, tax matters, treasury, and financial planning. Brunieri warns that both technical and behavioral factors influence termination decisions, and Malfi reinforces that the popular saying is a simplification of reality.
