The Judicial Court of Madeira is trying 16 defendants for fraud crimes related to airline travel. The trial is taking place at the autonomous region's court.
The main defendant is R. Ferreira, a travel agent who is alleged to have been the mastermind of the fraudulent scheme. According to the indictment, Ferreira devised various plans to obtain subsidies improperly.
The frauds allegedly involved the manipulation of reservations and purchases of airline tickets, with the aim of defrauding subsidies to which the defendants were not entitled. The scheme may have caused significant damages.
The trial is ongoing, with the 16 defendants facing charges of qualified fraud. Authorities investigated the case for months before bringing the indictment.
