"Fruit Heroes" raises fruit and vegetable consumption to 85% in Braga schools

Braga TV14 September 2026 at 23:52

The "Fruit Heroes" project managed to significantly increase the consumption of fruits and vegetables among students in the Braga district. The rate of students who consume fruit and vegetables daily rose from 75.9% to 85.3% during the 2024/2025 school year, representing a growth of almost ten percentage points.

The data was revealed by APCOI, the Portuguese Association against Childhood Obesity, which coordinates the initiative. The monitoring study was developed by the Institute of Environmental Health of the Faculty of Medicine, which monitors the project's results in participating schools.

The "Fruit Heroes" project aims to promote healthy eating habits among children and young people of school age, encouraging regular consumption of fruits and vegetables. The results achieved demonstrate the positive impact that food education programs can have on students' diets.

Why this matters

Students in Braga schools are consuming more fruits and vegetables, which may have long-term health benefits. The project's success shows that food education programs in schools can be effective in changing young people's eating habits.

Depression: when sadness is not just "a part of getting old"

An article warns about the underdiagnosis of depression in the elderly in Brazil, where approximately 36 million people are 60 years old or older. According to the WHO, 15% of elderly people aged 70 or older live with mental disorders, but many cases go unidentified because symptoms extend beyond sadness, including apathy, isolation, persistent pain, changes in sleep, appetite, and memory. Experts warn that sadness and depression are not synonyms, and that when negative feelings persist for a long time, it is necessary to seek professional help.
