Correio Alentejo15 September 2026 at 01:00

The work of the sixth archaeological excavation campaign in the area of Cerca das Alcarias, in the village of Mesquita, in the municipality of Mértola, ended on Tuesday, October 15. The work had started on September 1, as part of the IACAM project – Archaeological Intervention in the Cercas das Alcarias.

The scientific coordination was overseen by Maria de Fátima Palma, from the Archaeological Camp of Mértola, and Bilal Sarr, from the University of Granada, in Spain, with support from the town council. The excavation included an international team of researchers and students from Portugal and Spain, including PhD candidate Manuel Tristán Martín Ruiz.

Throughout the campaign period, the team lived alongside the community of the village of Mesquita, sharing the first results of the excavation. The work focused on sectors II and III, with the aim of understanding the residential structures of the Islamic period in a rural context.

Why this matters

Readers in the Mértola region follow the development of a local archaeological project that aims to understand the history of the Islamic period in the area, with the participation of an international team and direct involvement of the community of the village of Mesquita in sharing the results. The campaign represents another step in the research coordinated by the Archaeological Camp of Mértola, a national reference in this field.

Depression: when sadness is not just "a part of getting old"

An article warns about the underdiagnosis of depression in the elderly in Brazil, where approximately 36 million people are 60 years old or older. According to the WHO, 15% of elderly people aged 70 or older live with mental disorders, but many cases go unidentified because symptoms extend beyond sadness, including apathy, isolation, persistent pain, changes in sleep, appetite, and memory. Experts warn that sadness and depression are not synonyms, and that when negative feelings persist for a long time, it is necessary to seek professional help.
