The Socialist Party (PS) requested an urgent debate in the Assembly of the Republic for Friday on the rising cost of living. The request was submitted on Monday morning to the office of the speaker of the assembly. The socialists intend to pressure the Government to implement new measures to address the rise in fuel prices, food prices, and housing costs.
The party led by José Luís Carneiro thus gets ahead of Chega, which had placed on the parliamentary agenda for September 24 proposals such as reducing VAT on fuels from 23% to 13% for one year and zero VAT on essential goods.
Eurico Brilhante Dias, the PS parliamentary leader, considered that the Government is "relatively paralyzed" in supporting the Portuguese and defended that decisions must be made quickly. The leader said he does not believe the Executive will not send the Finance or Economy ministers to parliament to answer deputies in Friday's debate.
On Sunday, Brilhante Dias accused Chega of helping the Government by presenting bills that only take effect in January 2027, arguing that the Portuguese will not endure until then. The PS has been presenting resolution projects with recommendations to the Executive as an alternative to measures that would only take effect next year.
