PSD/Açores defends construction of new Integrated Basic School of Lagoa with gymnasium

jornalacores9.pt14 September 2026 at 10:54

PSD/Açores today defended the construction of the new Integrated Basic School of Lagoa, including a gymnasium, warning that a change to the project could put at risk the funding secured through the Açores 2030 programme. The party considers it essential that the original project be maintained to guarantee the European funds already secured.

The warning comes following a meeting of Social-Democrat MP Rúben Cabral with representatives of the local community. According to a press release from PSD/Açores, the parliamentarian warned of the risks of modifying a project that already has approved funding from the Açores 2030 programme.

The school is part of a set of investments planned for the Lagoa region, in the Azores archipelago. PSD/Açores underlines that any substantial change to the project could compromise not only the gymnasium, but also the entirety of the available European funding.

The Social-Democrat party expressed its willingness to monitor the process and ensure that the construction proceeds as planned, without jeopardizing the European funds destined for the modernization of educational infrastructure in the region.

Why this matters

Residents of Lagoa, in the Azores, may benefit from better educational infrastructure if the project proceeds as planned. The warning about potential loss of funding from the Açores 2030 programme underscores the importance of maintaining the original project scope to secure regional development funds for the island.
