São Pedro do Sul is claiming to join the pilot project announced by the Government for controlling the wild boar population. The municipality argues that it meets the conditions to participate in the experimental phase, given the work already carried out in coordination with the hunting associations, hunters, and farmers of the municipality. The request was sent to the Minister of Agriculture and the Sea, José Manuel Fernandes, requesting formal integration into the project, information on the technical criteria for selecting territories, and a working meeting with the Ministry and the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests.
In 2026, the municipality supported 14 hunting associations with co-financing between 500 and 3,000 euros per entity, through a measure aimed at strengthening hunting activity and controlling the wild boar population. The support covered different legally permitted forms of hunting, the direct participation of hunters, the creation and maintenance of cultivation strips, feeders and ponds, as well as other actions for managing hunting zones.
The measure came after meetings with the municipality's associations, in which the damages caused by wild boar and the conditions necessary to make control actions more effective were identified. The municipality is now preparing to repeat the support, intending to integrate it into the Municipal Regulation for Rural Development Support to ensure continuity of the initiative.
The Minister of Agriculture and the Sea recently announced that the Government is preparing a pilot project that provides financial compensation for each wild boar killed in areas with excessive populations. According to the municipality, it would not be understandable for a municipality with 14 already mobilized associations and concrete measures to be left out of a national project with the same objectives.
