Second breakdown worsens congestion over eight kilometres

dnoticias.pt14 September 2026 at 09:22

A second breakdown is worsening traffic congestion on the Via Rápida, in the direction Machico - Ribeira Brava, which already extends eight kilometres in length. Traffic became even more complicated when a light passenger car broke down on top of the Comboio viaduct, occupying the left lane.

The light vehicle had its orange emergency triangle placed on the ground, signalling the breakdown situation. The concessionaire's assistance service has reportedly dealt with this vehicle's situation, unlike what happened with a concrete mixer truck that is also broken down on the road.

The presence of the two broken-down vehicles on the Via Rápida is forcing other drivers to weave in and out in order to get through the location, contributing to the intense existing congestion.

Why this matters

Drivers who use the Via Rápida between Machico and Ribeira Brava are facing significant delays due to this double breakdown. The presence of the concrete mixer truck on the road continues to force weaving manoeuvres, increasing the risk of accidents. The concessionaire has already resolved the situation of the light car, but the truck remains as an obstacle.
