Six Algarve municipalities are today at "maximum" rural fire danger

Jornal do Algarve14 September 2026 at 09:05

The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) classified six Algarve municipalities with "maximum" rural fire danger, on a day when fire risk is particularly high across much of the region. The municipalities in question are Monchique, Portimão, Silves, São Brás de Alportel, Tavira, and Loulé.

In addition to these six municipalities, five others present "very high" danger: Aljezur, Vila do Bispo, Lagos, Alcoutim, and Castro Marim. Lagos, Albufeira, Faro, and Vila Real de Santo António have been classified with "high" danger, while Olhão presents "moderate" risk.

IPMA's classification system for rural fire danger is divided into five levels, ranging from "reduced" to "maximum." The calculation of these levels is based on meteorological data, including air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and the amount of precipitation recorded in the previous 24 hours.

Why this matters

Residents and visitors in the Algarve face elevated rural fire risk, especially in the mountainous areas of Monchique and Silves. Local populations should avoid activities that could cause ignitions and remain attentive to potential evacuation orders, following guidance from civil protection authorities.

Analyst Ricardo Ribeiro warned that Portugal has all the conditions for an uncontrolled fire outbreak if ignition occurs, especially during periods of very high or maximum risk. During these periods, the law strictly prohibits activities such as controlled burns, bonfires, barbecues, and work with machinery that produces sparks, measures aimed at preventing the start of fires.

Anti-rain dome in Portugal for 7 days: "there is an explanation"

Portugal should face seven days practically without rain, between September 14 and 21, despite the passage of deep depressions over the North Atlantic. This situation, described as an "anti-rain dome," results from a specific atmospheric configuration: an upper-level ridge extends from the subtropical Atlantic to the Iberian Peninsula, favoring the descent of air and atmospheric stability, which makes it difficult for clouds to form and for significant precipitation to occur across most of the territory.
