Winger Marcus Edwards, a former Sporting player, has expressed his determination to represent Cyprus internationally. Edwards, who currently plays for Burnley, is the son of an English father and a Cypriot mother, which makes him eligible to represent that European national team.
The possible internationalisation of Edwards by Cyprus comes at a time when the 25-year-old player has been showing good performances in the Championship, the English second division, while playing for Burnley.
The player went through a complicated phase in his career during his time at Sporting CP between 2023 and 2024, where he failed to establish himself as a regular option in the first team, which is believed to have influenced his decision to return to English football.
This is not the first time the possibility of Edwards representing Cyprus has arisen, with the eligibility process having been discussed previously, but now the player is publicly reinforcing his desire to wear the Cypriot colours.
