D. Maria II National Theatre Reopens with Programming Open to the City

Jornal de Mafra13 September 2026 at 13:12

The D. Maria II National Theatre reopened its doors at its Rossio building between September 18 and 20, after a period of closure for renovation works. The reopening was celebrated with three days of free-entry programming that included a videomapping spectacle on the façade, DJ sets at D. Pedro IV Square, visits to the renovated spaces, an exhibition dedicated to the institution's 180 years, and the performance of the Choir of Rebeginning.

The celebrations began on September 18 with the premiere of Macbeth by William Shakespeare, in a production and translation by Pedro Penim. The choice of the play recovers a landmark episode in the theatre's history: Macbeth was the show being performed on the night of December 2, 1964, when a fire left the building in ruins. More than 60 years later, Shakespeare's tragedy returned to the Sala Garrett to mark the reopening, remaining on stage until October 31.

On the same day, starting at 9:30 PM, Rossio transformed into an extension of the theatre with a party open to the city. The façade hosted a videomapping show created by United VJs, with creative direction by Pedro Zaz, which traced different moments in the institution's history through images, sounds, and archival materials. Between each videomapping presentation, there were DJ sets by ZenGxrl, Beatbombers, and Marfox, accompanied by VJ sets from United VJs.

On September 19 and 20, the public was invited to explore the renovated building through visits to different spaces, including areas usually reserved for artists. On September 19 at 4 PM, a new edition of Macbeth was launched, published by TNDM II and Bicho-do-Mato, with the translation by Pedro Penim. On September 20 at 4 PM, various spaces in the building hosted the Choir of Rebeginning, conducted by the artistic structure ondamarela and created in June 2026, in a presentation open to the public.

Why this matters

Lisboetas and visitors recover a central cultural landmark of the city, which had been closed for months. The free programming allows anyone to participate in the reopening and explore the renovated building, including spaces usually off-limits to the public. This is also a historic moment, as Macbeth completes a 60-year cycle since the 1964 tragedy.
